WALKS ON WATER
with:
Kathrin Schuster, Maria Ines Neves, Nargis Kurtkaya , Lilly Kammerman

The second part of the workshop ‘Tools for Urban Explorations’aimed at introducing participants to a critical and poetic reading of the city. In the process we developed tools for understanding, documenting and decoding the interaction with the urban and human environment and practiced artistic research as situated urban practice.

This 2-day workshop was led by Matilde Igual Capdevila and Eleni Boutsika Palles and explored the connections between art, architecture and the city. Using walking as situated urban practice, we set out to explore the surfaces, textures, shapes and stories of the urban environment of the city of Vienna and practiced translating field research into making space.

As research focus we chose the element of water in the city. On our first session we shared our previous knowledges on water and explored the map of Vienna. On the second session we undertook an extended walk around the city and visited public pools, ponds, fountains and the (not so blue) Danube. Looking into the politics and spatial dramaturgies of these everyday places, we collected patterns, images, sounds and scenes.

On the second day, we worked indoors on the translation of the collected material into new narratives and fictional mise-en-scènes echoing the physical sites. What we present here is a collaborative composition of our observations, the first stages of a re-reading of the urban fabric of Vienna.
